Zapatoca, known as the “City of the Silk Climate,” is a must-see destination in Santander. In 2023, it won the “Best Tourism Villages” award from the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), which recognises it as one of the best villages in the world for rural tourism. Just 2 hours from Bucaramanga, the journey to this destination is an experience in itself, as it crosses the imposing canyon of the Suarez River, where you can see pineapple and prickly pear cactus crops and wild goats in the landscape.
In Zapatoca, you'll find sites full of history and nature, such as the Cueva del Nitro, a natural formation used in ancient times by indigenous people as a refuge and which today is the only cave in Colombia with interior lighting. You can also tour the historic Lenguerke Paths, which connect with its urban area adorned with centuries-old churches, colonial architecture, and a quiet atmosphere that preserves the essence of heritage villages. It's definitely a destination that combines culture, history, and unique landscapes to enjoy in every corner.
