The Giza Pyramid Complex, often referred to as the Giza Necropolis, is located on the Giza Plateau in the Greater Cairo area of Egypt. This iconic archaeological site includes the renowned Great Pyramid of Giza, the Pyramid of Khafre, and the Pyramid of Menkaure, each accompanied by their respective pyramid complexes and the legendary Great Sphinx. These ancient structures were built during Egypt’s Fourth Dynasty, dating back to approximately 2600–2500 BC. Positioned at the edge of the Western Desert, the complex lies about 9 kilometres west of the Nile River in the city of Giza, and approximately 13 kilometres southwest of city centre Cairo. Due to its historical significance, the Giza Plateau was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.

The Great Sphinx of Giza is the most iconic and well-known of its kind. Carved directly from the natural limestone bedrock during Egypt’s 4th Dynasty (around 2613–2494 BC), it is also the oldest known sphinx in existence. In ancient Egyptian culture, sphinxes symbolised the pharaoh, combining the head of a king with the powerful body of a lion to represent strength, authority, and divine kingship.

The Egyptian Museum holds the distinction of being the oldest archaeological museum in the Middle East and is home to the world’s most extensive collection of artefacts from ancient Egypt. Its vast displays span a wide timeline, from the Predynastic period all the way to the Greco-Roman era. The museum’s design was selected through the region’s first international architectural competition in 1895, ultimately awarded to French architect Marcel Dourgnon. Officially opened in 1902, the inauguration was led by Khedive Abbas Helmy II. Since then, the museum has become a cultural icon in the heart of Cairo, preserving some of the most extraordinary treasures of ancient Egyptian civilisation.
