Tambopata National Reserve is primarily characterised by protecting wildlife, flora, and fauna, as well as the scenic beauty of the subtropical rainforest of southeastern Peru. It includes habitats such as aguajales, pacales, clay licks, chestnut groves, terrace forests, riparian forests, and lakes or cochas, which form unique ecosystems with a high diversity of species, many of which have very restricted ranges. Puerto Maldonado, thanks to its scenic resources and emblematic flora and fauna species, is an exceptionally potential destination for nature tourism and environmental education. Attractions include the oxbow lakes, such as Sandoval, Cocococha, and Sachavacayoc, among others; and the Chuncho and Colorado macaw clay licks, which are home to hundreds of psittacines.
