In the heart of Cosenza’s historic centre, in Calabria, discover the Museo dei Brettii e degli Enotri, housed in the 16th-century monumental complex of Sant’Agostino. The museum tells the storey of the city, its surrounding territory and their peoples through an archaeological collection spanning Prehistory to the Roman period. The exhibition traces the main stages of this history: from evidence of the earliest Stone Age inhabitants to the civilisation of the Oenotrians, through the history of the Brettii and on to the Roman city of Consentia. Highlights include the grave goods from the Torre del Mordillo necropolis, in Spezzano Albanese, and artefacts from the sanctuary of Cozzo Michelicchio, associated with the colony of Sybaris. Alongside finds from archaeological excavations in Cosenza’s historic centre, pottery, ornaments and everyday objects reveal the customs, trade, craftsmanship and rituals of the ancient world. The visit also includes the section dedicated to the Risorgimento, adding another chapter to the city’s history. Alongside its collection, the museum offers organised guided tours and educational programmes for schools and young visitors, with activities that introduce archaeology through play and discovery. Particular attention is given to accessibility and inclusion, with specially designed routes, replicas of artefacts for tactile exploration and a sensory decompression space. An experience that brings adults and children closer to Cosenza’s history and heritage, encouraging curiosity and a desire to learn.
