What you can expect

Begin your full-day tour across central Crete, from ancient ruins to mountain serenity to the legendary shores of Matala.

Head southwest into the foothills of Mount Psiloritis (Ida). The village of Zaros is known for its pure spring water and fresh trout. Stop at the lakeside tavernas for a coffee or early lunch, then hike the Rouvas Gorge trail — one of Crete's best-kept secrets, through ancient oak forest. The trail is about 10 km return; wear proper shoes and allow at least 1.5–2 hours if you go in.

Next, descend to the south coast. The famous clifftop caves above the beach are Neolithic tombs that became Roman burial chambers — and in the 1960s, home to a thriving hippie community. Sturdy footwear is a must on the rock face.

End the day on the sandy beach below the caves, gazing out over the Libyan Sea. Snorkel to the right near the rocks, or grab a drink at one of the beachside bars and catch the sunset. The town has a wonderfully laid-back, timeless vibe.
