The Spirit of Detroit

The Spirit of Detroit is one of Detroit’s most recognisable landmarks and a powerful symbol of the city. Created by sculptor Marshall Fredericks, the 26-foot-tall bronze statue was unveiled in 1958. The figure holds a golden sphere with a cross in his left hand, symbolising God, and a family in his right hand, representing people. Located near the Coleman A. Young Municipal Centre, the statue reflects Detroit’s connection to faith, family, and community. It has become an enduring symbol of Detroit and its people.

Joe Louis Monument

The Joe Louis Monument, also known as The Fist, stands in city centre Detroit at the crossroads of Woodward Avenue and Jefferson Avenue. Created by Mexican-American artist Robert Graham, the monument was dedicated in 1986 to honour legendary Detroit boxer Joe Louis. The giant bronze forearm and fist symbolise Louis’s strength, courage, and determination. Joe Louis was born in Alabama but grew up in Detroit and became one of the greatest heavyweight boxers in history. The monument also reflects Detroit’s deep connection to his life and legacy.

The Guardian Building

The Guardian Building is one of Detroit’s most famous Art Deco landmarks. Completed in 1929, it was designed by architect Wirt C. Rowland and originally opened as the Union Trust Building. The building is known for its colourful Pewabic and Rookwood tiles, intricate mosaics, and Native American-inspired designs. Inside, the grand banking hall features a beautiful vaulted ceiling and detailed artwork celebrating Michigan and Detroit. Because of its distinctive design and rich decoration, the Guardian Building is often called Detroit’s “Cathedral of Finance.”

Capitol Park

Capitol Park is a historic public square in the heart of city centre Detroit. It gets its name from the Michigan State Capitol, which stood here from 1837 to 1847, before the state capital moved to Lansing. Today, the park is surrounded by historic buildings, restaurants, and shops. In the centre stands a monument honouring Stevens T. Mason, Michigan’s first governor. Capitol Park has played an important role in Detroit’s history and remains a popular gathering place in the city’s city centre.

Book Tower

The Book Tower is one of Detroit’s most recognisable historic skyscrapers. Completed in 1926, it was designed by architect Louis Kamper as part of the Book Building complex. The tower rises 475 feet with 38 stories and features beautiful Italian Renaissance-inspired details. Look up at the top, and you’ll notice the decorative caryatids, or carved female figures, along the tower. After years of vacancy, the Book Tower reopened in 2023 as part of a major redevelopment project, bringing new life to this historic Detroit landmark.

Michigan Theater Building

The Michigan Theatre Building is a historic landmark in city centre Detroit, located on Bagley Street near Woodward Avenue. The theatre opened in 1926 and was designed by architect John Donaldson. It was once a grand film palace with beautiful French Renaissance-style interiors. Today, the most interesting part is what remains inside the building. The former theatre was transformed into a Barton 3/27 Wurlitzer organ showroom and car park. If you look up from the street, you can still see parts of the original theater’s ornate exterior, giving us a glimpse of Detroit’s entertainment history.

Grand Circus Park

Grand Circus Park is a historic public park in the heart of city centre Detroit. The park was designed in the 1850s as part of Augustus Woodward’s plan for the city. It covers about 5 acres and connects Detroit’s city centre business district with the entertainment and theatre district. The park is surrounded by historic buildings, including the David Whitney Building, Comerica Park, and Fox Theatre area. At the centre, you’ll find beautiful fountains and monuments. Today, Grand Circus Park remains a popular gathering place for visitors, events, concerts, and festivals.
