  • The Carpathian Mountains are home to wild brown bears. While safe inside the vehicle or at standard viewpoints, always follow your guide's instructions.
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes or trainers. If climbing to Poenari is permitted during your visit, be prepared for a steep hike (1,480 stairs). Modest clothing (covered shoulders/knees) is required inside Curtea de Argeș Monastery.

  • Due to its wild location in the Carpathian Mountains, access to the top of Poenari Fortress (via the 1,480 stairs) is strictly regulated by local authorities due to wild brown bear activity and safety measures. Access may be restricted to specific hours or closed entirely during bad weather/winter. If climbing is restricted on the day of your tour, we will still stop at the base of the mountain to admire and photograph this incredible cliffside stronghold from the best viewpoints, while your guide shares its fascinating history.

Curtea de Arges Monastery

Your first stop is one of Romania’s most beautiful architectural masterpieces. Curtea de Argeș is a stunning 16th-century limestone monastery wrapped in a tragic local legend of sacrifice. It is also the final resting place of Romania’s Kings and Queens. You’ll explore the elegant grounds and learn about its fascinating, ornate design.

Vidraru Dam

Next, we drive deeper into the mountains towards Vidraru Dam, a colossal engineering marvel built during the communist era. Standing over 166 metres tall, it holds back a massive, pristine lake surrounded by wild pine forests. If weather permits, you’ll catch a glimpse of the peaks of the famous Transfăgărășan highway.

Poenari Citadel (Pass by)

Perched high on a steep cliff overlooking the Argeș River lies Poenari Fortress. Unlike Bran Castle (which Dracula barely visited), Poenari was Vlad the Impaler’s actual mountain stronghold, built by his prisoners. Note: Due to its wild location, we will admire its dramatic, imposing ruins. Access to the top via the 1,480 steps is subject to local safety regulations regarding wildlife (bears).
