Activity itinerary

Writers' Museum

  • 15m
Kick off inside the quiet courtyard of The Writers’ Museum, tucked away in Lady Stair’s Close just off the Lawnmarket. Here you’ll learn about choosing a subject in a busy scene which will result in your images feeling a little less chaotic.

Gladstone's Land

  • 15m
Step into this 17th-century merchant house located on the historic Lawnmarket, and peek down an Old Town 'close'. Observe the street and shopfronts while experimenting with light and shadow, using light to create a stage.

Victoria street

  • 15m
Wander along this curving, colourful street lined with historic shopfronts and cafés. Capture vibrant colours, street life, and reflections in windows. Practice leading lines, and how they help guide the viewer’s eye through an image.

Grassmarket

  • 15m
Explore the lively Grassmarket square, rich in history as a former livestock market and site of public executions. Here we will look at 'Street Photography' - capturing life as it happens. People moving through the scene, small moments, and everyday stories. Keep an eye on the dramatic Castle view at the far end.

The Vennel Viewpoint Edinburgh Castle

  • 15m
Step up to this iconic elevated viewpoint for a panoramic glimpse of the Old Town rooftops and narrow closes below. Our objective here is to use physical objects as a frame. There will also be time to capture that classic 'Insta' photo.

Greyfriars Kirk

  • 15m
Step inside Greyfriars Kirkyard, where centuries-old gravestones, mausoleums and creeping plant life create striking visual contrasts. Here you’ll learn how photographers use texture and contrast to highlight the meeting point between nature and carved stone. As a bonus topic, we will also look at depth of field and how it helps isolate your subject from the surrounding scene.

Writers' Museum

  • 15m
Conclude the walk back at The Writer's Museum. Reflect on the day’s compositions and storytelling techniques.
