This is not your typical aqueduct tour and quick photo stop. This is the self-guided audio tour to go inside the fortress and understand what it was like to live inside a war machine.

Elvas is the most fortified city in Europe, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it was called the Queen of the Frontier because for 800 years it was the key that locked Portugal to Spain. This 10-stop route is 100 percent intramuros, 100 percent on foot, and 100 percent inside the 17th-century Vauban-bastioned enclosure.

We don't go out to the outer forts. We stay inside, where the gunpowder was kept, the Moorish castle, the barracks-churches, the hidden Jewish quarter, and the chapel where soldiers prayed before they died.
