Another landmark of Megalochori is the elaborate steeples of the impressive churches, two of which stand at the centre of the village. It is very famous for its vineyards and wineries. There are also two remote beaches on the Caldera side, both named after churches in the area,Plaka and Thermi beach. They are only accessible on foot or by boat. At its top there is the Monastery of Profitis Ilias (or Prophet Elias) and it counts among the island's oldest and most important Orthodox landmarks. It was founded in 1711 by Gabriel and Ioakeim (2 monks) and it was built in the style of a fortress. It ran a school from 1806 to 1845 where Greek language and literature were among the main subjects taught. Today, the Monastery even has its own museum with a collection of rare ecclesiastical books, Byzantine icons and sculptures. This is a tranquil and quiet place where many visitors wish to stay longer. Flowers and trees have been planted around the Monastery and over 700 olive trees complete the picture from where you can enjoy breathing panoramic views.

- 20m
The most impressive work of art created by the volcano is obviously the Red Beach. It is the most popular among the beaches of the island. It is located in the southeastern part of the island, in the area of Akrotiri, approximately 8 km from Fira. The teacher's sand is composed of black and red pulverized volcanic rock. The nature itself continues to transform this artwork, as the salt, the sun, the rain water and the wind still mould the impressive cliffs and constantly give them new shapes. To reach the beach you have to walk a couple of minutes on a downhill path or you can access it by boat from Akrotiri port, Kamari or Perissa. The island's authorities have issued a banning Directive for attending the beach years ago, due to the frequent landslides and whoever decides to visit the beach does so of his own responsibility. Don't miss this incomparable landscape!!

It ceased operation during WWII but was restored by the Greek Navy in 1945. The square tower rises 10 metres above the keeper's house. Before electricity in 1988, it ran on petrol. Today, it emits a white light every 20 seconds, visible up to 24 nautical miles. While access is restricted to Greek Navy personnel, visitors can enjoy the surrounding trails, breathtaking sea views, and a romantic sunset. The serene vibe contrasts beautifully with nature’s raw power.

Visiting Akrotiri offers a unique blend of history, education, and tourism, with the Red Beach nearby.
