Pikillaqta is considered to be one of the most famous and best preserved cities in the pre-Inca world. This archaeological centre was built by the wari culture that developed in the Andean area between 700 AD and 1100 AD. The Wari were an Andean civilisation that flourished in the centre of the Andes. The Wari Empire established distinctive architectural centers in many of its provinces, such as Cajamarquilla or Piquillacta, is next to the Inca Empire, one of only two cultures considered imperial appeared in the southern hemisphere. Their main activity was military in nature and they fought throughout Peruvian territory, conquering the various lordships of their time. They also had large religious centers like Pachacámac in Lima.
