What you can expect

  • Begin your journey in Karakol, one of the major tourist centers on the eastern shore of Lake Issyk-Kul. From here, travel to the famous Jeti-Oguz Gorge, located about 30 kilometres southwest of the city. The name “Jeti-Oguz” translates as “Seven Bulls”, referring to the remarkable red sandstone cliffs that resemble seven giant bulls standing side by side.

These unique rock formations are among the most recognisable natural landmarks in Kyrgyzstan and are surrounded by beautiful alpine meadows, forests, and mountain landscapes. One of the highlights of the gorge is the legendary Broken Heart Rock, a striking cliff shaped like a heart split into two halves. According to local folklore, the rock symbolises a tragic love storey that has been passed down through generations.

The next destination is the Barskoon Gorge, located along the southern shore of Lake Issyk-Kul. The gorge is famous for its crystal-clear mountain rivers, dense spruce forests, and several breathtaking waterfalls. Among the most popular are the “Tears of the Snow Leopard” and “Old Man’s Beard” waterfalls. Follow a well-maintained hiking trail leading to the waterfalls, making the route suitable for people with an average level of physical fitness.

The hike offers magnificent views of the Tian Shan Mountains, lush forests, and rushing streams. The sound of cascading water and the peaceful mountain atmosphere create an unforgettable experience for nature lovers. Barskoon Gorge is also known for its monument dedicated to Yuri Gagarin, the first human in space, who spent time relaxing in this area after his historic space missions. This monument adds historical significance to the natural beauty of the gorge.

After exploring the waterfalls, enjoy a lunch break. Depending on the tour arrangement, dine at a local café or have a picnic surrounded by the spectacular mountain scenery. This break allows you to relax before continuing the journey.

In the afternoon, proceed to one of Kyrgyzstan’s most extraordinary natural wonders—Skazka Canyon, also known as Fairy Tale Canyon. The canyon earned its name because its colourful sandstone formations resemble castles, towers, animals, mythical creatures, and other fantastic shapes. Over thousands of years, wind, rain, and sunlight have sculpted the rocks into unique natural masterpieces displaying vibrant shades of red, orange, yellow, and pink.

Walking through the canyon feels like entering another world, where nature has become a gifted sculptor. Explore narrow paths, climb to panoramic viewpoints, and admire breathtaking landscapes overlooking both the canyon and Lake Issyk-Kul. During the late afternoon, the changing sunlight creates spectacular colours across the rock formations, making this one of the best locations in Kyrgyzstan for landscape photography.
