Starting Time 06:30 AM to 09:30 Hrs. (Morning)
A Kumarakom bird watching tour through the canals is a guided nature experience along the beautiful backwaters of Lake Vembanad and the interconnecting waterways of Kumarakom. You’ll cruise quietly through narrow canals and open water, immersing yourself in the sights and sounds of wetland birds, lush greenery, and rural life. This tour showcases Kerala’s unique ecosystem where birds thrive amid mangroves, paddy lands and water channels.
Starting Point
Most tours depart early in the morning from a boat jetty or backwater launch point in Kumarakom, Kerala — typically around sunrise when bird activity is at its peak.
Board your traditional Shikara or small boat early in the morning. The calm waters and gentle rowing/paddling let you get close to shorelines without disturbing birds.
Cruise Through Canals & Backwaters
Navigate through narrow canals that branch off from Vembanad Lake. You’ll pass through:
Wetland fringes and reed beds
Mangrove patches frequented by birds
Paddy fields and village edges
Your guide points out bird species, explains their habits, and stops or slows when there’s a good sighting.
08:30–09:00 AM – Return
Cruise back to the starting jetty via an alternative stretch of the waterway for more views.
