Established in 1978, the park was created to preserve Kenya's unique marine biodiversity and promote sustainable tourism. The park is made up of 4 islands: Kisite, Mpunguti ya Juu, Mpunguti ya Chini, and Liwe la Jahazi.

Situated in the Indian Ocean, off the south coast of Kenya near the Tanzanian border, the park covers 39 square kilometres of pristine marine habitat, including coral gardens and seagrass meadows. The park has a tropical climate with warm temperatures year-round, influenced by monsoon winds and ocean currents.

The park boasts over 250 species of tropical fish, including angelfish, parrotfish, and butterflyfish. Green and hawksbill turtles frequent the park's waters and nesting beaches, and bottlenose and spinner dolphins are often spotted, delighting visitors with acrobatic displays.

The park boasts over 50 genera of corals, creating a kaleidoscope of underwater colours. Fringing and patch reefs provide habitat for countless marine species and protect coastlines. Ongoing efforts to protect and restore coral reefs from climate change and human impacts are in place.

Shallow reefs offer excellent opportunities for visitors to explore this underwater wonderland. The Digo and Swahili people have deep cultural ties to the marine environment, with traditional sustainable practices passed down through generations. Ancient trade routes and shipwrecks tell of the coastal heritage.
