What you can expect
Your journey begins early in the morning as you leave Marrakech behind and head south towards the High Atlas Mountains in a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle. The drive offers a dramatic transition from the urban energy of Marrakech to the quiet majesty of the Atlas range. As your vehicle winds up the mountain roads, you will climb towards the Tizi n'Tichka Pass, which sits at an elevation of 2,260 metres above sea level. Along the route, your driver will make several scenic breaks, giving you opportunities to snap photos of terraced valleys, steep rock faces, and traditional mud-brick Berber villages clinging to the mountainsides.
Descending from the high peaks, you will arrive at the UNESCO World Heritage site of Kasbah Ait Benhaddou around midday. This ancient fortified ksar, constructed entirely of rammed earth, clay, and straw, stands as one of the finest surviving examples of southern Moroccan earthen architecture. You will have ample time to walk across the riverbed, wander through the labyrinth of narrow alleys, and ascend to the top granary for sweeping views of the surrounding palm groves and desert landscape. Because this striking location has served as the backdrop for iconic films and television series such as Gladiator, The Mummy, and Game of Thrones, exploring its towers feels like walking onto a living film set. Following your tour of the village, you can sit down for a traditional Moroccan lunch at a local restaurant with a view overlooking the kasbah.
After lunch, the tour proceeds towards Ouarzazate, widely celebrated as the “Hollywood of Africa.” Just on the outskirts of the city, you will make a stop outside Atlas Film Studios—one of the largest film production facilities in the world. From the exterior, you can view and photograph the impressive entrance gates and massive studio sets towering above the desert floor without spending time on an extensive interior tour. This brief stop offers a quick glimpse into Morocco's thriving cinematic industry before continuing into the heart of the city.
The final major highlight of the day is a visit to Kasbah Taourirt, located in central Ouarzazate. Once the power base of the influential El Glaoui family during the 19th and early 20th centuries, this historic mud-brick fortress features intricate geometric decorations, high towers, and a complex maze of inner chambers and courtyards. You will have time to explore the grand reception rooms and admire the traditional craftsmanship of the painted cedar ceilings and stucco carving. Late in the afternoon, you will board your vehicle for the comfortable drive back across the Atlas Mountains, arriving back in Marrakech by early evening for drop-off at your hotel or riad.
