By midday, arrive at the archaeological zone of El Tajín, located near the town of Papantla in the state of Veracruz. Recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1992, El Tajín is one of Mexico’s most impressive pre-Hispanic cities. It is renowned for its distinctive architecture, featuring stepped pyramids, relief carvings, and more than a dozen ball courts—the largest concentration in all of Mesoamerica.

After the decline of Teotihuacan around 600–650 CE, El Tajín rose to prominence during this time, flourishing between 800 and 1200 CE. It became a powerful ceremonial and political centre for the Totonac culture, known for its artistry, agricultural productivity, and architectural innovation.

The most famous monument here is the Pyramid of the Niches, a breathtaking structure with 365 recessed niches symbolising the solar calendar. This pyramid is not only a masterpiece of Totonac engineering but also a reflection of their deep astronomical knowledge and religious beliefs. The abundance of ball courts also highlights the ritual significance of the Mesoamerican ballgame, a practice tied to fertility, warfare, and cosmic cycles.

The Totonacs were skilled farmers who cultivated maize, beans, vanilla, and cotton in the fertile lands of Veracruz. One of the most famous is the “Danza de los Voladores” (Dance of the Flyers), a spectacular ritual performance where dancers descend from a tall pole in a circular motion. Although not performed inside the archaeological site itself, this tradition is native to Papantla and remains a living connection to the ancient Totonac worldview.
