What you can expect

  • Santo Domingo’s Colonial Zone tells only one chapter of the country’s storey. This private full-day experience carries that history beyond the historic centre, into the landscapes and communities where sugar, slavery, salt production, religion and rural life shaped the Dominican Republic. Stand among the stone ruins of a colonial sugar complex linked to enslaved labour, cross one of the country’s most unexpected dry landscapes, and later walk among wooden homes in a community that grew around a later generation of the sugar industry.

This is a cultural journey for travellers who want to understand more than the capital’s famous monuments. Instead of another city sightseeing route, spend the day exploring places rarely connected together in a standard Dominican itinerary.

At the historic Boca de Nigua sugar complex, see the remains of colonial sugar production and learn about the enslaved people who worked there, including the history of resistance associated with the site.

The landscape changes dramatically as the journey continues towards the coast. Visit the salt flats, where sun, seawater and human labour have shaped a completely different environment from the tropical scenery most visitors associate with the Dominican Republic.

The route also passes through the Baní dunes, offering a striking transition into one of the driest landscapes on the island. The dunes are a scenic stop within the journey rather than the main focus of the day.

In a quiet rural community, visit the San Martín de Porres Sanctuary, a stone religious complex built with the participation of nearby communities in the late 1970s. Here, the experience is as much about the surrounding settlement, local architecture and rural life as it is about the sanctuary itself.

Later, discover another chapter of Dominican sugar history in the community surrounding the former CAEI sugar complex in Yaguate, whose origins date to the 1880s. The industrial property itself is closed, but the surrounding village preserves wooden houses, porches and traces of the community that developed around the sugar industry.

Taken together, these places reveal a side of Dominican history that is difficult to understand from the capital alone: how colonial production evolved into later industry, and how those industries influenced the communities, landscapes and everyday life that remain today.

Travel privately from Santo Domingo at a relaxed pace, with time for conversation, photographs and a local lunch during the day.
