Look out for our sign posts to show you the way. There are other car parks, so make sure you go to the correct location. In the afternoon we offer a complementary shuttle between 1-5pm to bring you back to your car. Off peak parking (early october and May): When there is no four hour parking restrictions, we park you in the DOC Ketetahi car park at the end of the track. Copy and paste this google maps location for directions to this car park https://maps.app.goo.gl/rgZp5pBomfecsrb49. There is no need for an afternoon shuttle during this time. Over flow parking is on SH46 on the sid eof the road. You then meet us at the entrance to the DOC ketetahi car park. No need to walk up to the car park.

Park your car (Peak season our car park, off peak in the DOC car park), the shuttle choices you up from there and takes you to the start of the track at Mangatepopo. That way you hike your way back to your car. No need for a bus in the afternoon.

What you can expect

  • Your day of adventure starts at first light with a scenic drive to Mangatepopo, the start of the Tongariro Alpine Hike. Your local guide will provide weather information, a map, and an information sheet before sending you on your journey.

    Your 20km hike follows spring-fed streams to the base of the Devils staircase. A steep ascent will reward you with your first views of Mt Taranaki and the breathtaking landscape.

    The hike continues past old lava flows, vast craters, and dramatic rock formations. You will cross the Red Crater Ridge to admire the Emerald Lakes, before descending to see the lakes up close.

    Your 6-8 hour hike comes to an end in Ketetahi car park. It takes and hour to drive to the mountain in the morning and an hour to drive back to Taupo in the afternoon. So your day has a duration of 10 hours altogether.
