What you can expect

The ancient Mayan city of Cobá was once a thriving metropolis in northeastern Yucatán. For over 1,000 years, its massive pyramids, plazas, palaces, and monuments lay hidden beneath the jungle, only recently uncovered by archaeologists. Today, Cobá offers a fascinating glimpse into Mayan history, where half-excavated ruins emerge from lush vegetation, surrounded by tropical birdlife. We explore this vast archaeological site by bicycle, following ancient pathways that connect its impressive structures.

Built around a network of small lakes, Cobá provided an ideal environment for agriculture, supporting what was likely the largest pre-Hispanic settlement in northern Yucatán during the Classic period (200-800 AD). Five main architectural groups are scattered around the lakes, linked by an intricate system of ancient white roads.

The nearby community of Punta Laguna is dedicated to eco-tourism and conservation, preserving both their cultural heritage and the surrounding forest. This breathtaking area features pristine lakes, deep cenotes with crystal-clear water, and a towering jungle canopy. A rich diversity of flora and fauna thrives here, including orchids, bromeliads, and countless bird and mammal species. Guided by local experts, we trek through jungle trails in search of wildlife, particularly the resident spider monkeys, whom the community has closely observed for over 20 years—recognizing each individual and their behaviours! The adventure continues with a peaceful canoe ride across the lake and an exhilarating zipline over the water.
To complete the experience, we visit a family-owned cenote, perfect for a refreshing swim, or even a daring jump for the brave. In the village of Nuevo Durango, we share a home-cooked meal with a local family, who introduce us to their gardens, medicinal plants, and an inspiring conservation project dedicated to reintroducing endangered animals into the wild. This journey is a perfect blend of history, nature, adventure, and authentic cultural experiences.
