Kyushu Discovery: Takachiho Gorge, Vintage Train & Shrine One-Day Excursion
This itinerary focuses on three core experiences to uncover Kyushu’s nature and myths, offering a streamlined journey into local charm.
Core Highlights
- Takachiho Gorge: Natural Wonders
Begin your adventure at Takachiho Gorge, home to the stunning Manai Waterfall. Marvel at this 80-meter cascade—ranked among Japan’s Top 100 Waterfalls—which often features morning rainbows; your guide will share the best photo spots to capture the view. Stroll along the Three Eras Bridge, a “corridor of time” with bridges from the Meiji, Showa, and Heisei eras, perfect for snapping reflections of the gorge.
For an extra thrill, opt for a 4km boat ride through the gorge’s 90° cliffs (tickets sold separately, advance booking recommended). Your guide will assist with boarding.
- Takachiho Vintage Train: A Showa-Era Journey
Next, hop on a vintage train to journey through Kyushu’s scenic landscapes. Its red-and-white carriages pass through cherry blossom tunnels (spring), green rice fields (summer), maple-lined gorges (autumn), and snow-dusted bridges (winter), with landmarks like the Crescent Moon Bridge and seasonal Fuji-like views framing the ride.
Savour the nostalgic atmosphere: enjoy Showa-era melodies, the clatter of wheels, and bird songs, while staff provide bubble machines for retro-style photos.Commencing February 1st, we’re delighted to offer all guests a unique wooden keepsake – the Takachiho Magatama, a traditional Japanese charm steeped in ancient mythology and symbolism.
- Amano Yasugawara Shrine: Myth & Blessings
Finally, visit Amano Yasugawara Shrine, a mythical site linked to the “Amano Iwato” legend recorded in the Kojiki (Japan’s oldest chronicle). Participate in the stone-stacking ritual—guides supervise this activity, and stones are provided—where legend says stacked stones make wishes come true. Listen to ancient Shinto stories and immerse yourself in Kyushu’s rich cultural heritage.
