Suárez Canyon Adventure: From Guane to La Fuente
Are you ready for a journey that will immerse you in the heart of a tropical dry forest and an ancestral legacy that has endured through time? This hike invites you to connect with an ancient landscape and discover the richness of a unique ecosystem.
The tour begins in Barichara, Colombia’s architectural jewel, where we will be picked up at the main park and transported to the picturesque village of Guane. This ancient indigenous settlement, where the Guane indigenous people lived during the colonial era, will transport you back to another time. After a refreshment, our native local guide will lead us onto the trail that descends into the Suárez Canyon.
With each step, you will witness the vastness of the canyon’s two sides, a breathtaking landscape that stretches to the horizon. This trail is a journey through the history of the Earth. You will observe rocks that were once part of an ancient sea, with embedded fossils that tell the storey of the region's geological history. The trail will lead us to the legendary Lengerke Bridge, also known as the Ruedas Bridge, an architectural gem built in the 19th century by the German Geo von Lengerke to connect the region’s roads.
As you approach the Suárez River, formerly known as the Sarabita River by the Guanes people, you will witness the beauty of the tropical dry forest. Our guide will show you its unique flora and fauna, including the possibility of spotting endemic species such as the remarkable silky anteater.
Finally, the trail will lead us to our final destination: the town of La Fuente. Here, we will enjoy a well-deserved lunch at the Quebrada La Pao, a natural watering hole where you can take a refreshing swim. In this location off the traditional tourist track, you will experience a unique connection with nature and the local communities. Through your visit, you will be directly contributing to the economy of these communities, which preserve the essence of the region.
After recharging our batteries, our transport will be waiting to take us back to Barichara, where we will conclude this experience in the main square. This is an ideal adventure for hiking and photography enthusiasts, as well as for those seeking an authentic connection with the region and its communities.
