What you can expect
Climb aboard the Trenino in Piazza Grande and set off on a tour of Gubbio, the “City of Stone.” Admire the city's most beautiful monuments, including the Palazzo dei Consoli and the Bargello Fountain, also known as the “Fool's Fountain.”
At the end of the tour, enjoy admission to the “San Francesco and Frate Lupo” open-air exhibition.
Afterwards, sample traditional truffle-based dishes, cold cuts, and a glass of wine at one of Gubbio's most authentic local spots.
The tour departs from Piazza Grande on the Gubbio Express train and lasts 40 minutes. You’ll see the most beautiful spots in the “City of Stone,” including its monuments and squares.
The tour ends at Piazza 40 Martiri, where you’ll find the entrance to the “San Francesco and Frate Lupo” exhibition. To mark the 800th anniversary of the saint’s death, we’re celebrating with this exhibition.
Gubbio is deeply connected to the saint’s life, as it was his first destination in early 1207 when, having left his father’s home and possessions behind, Francis travelled there to visit the Spadalonga family’s home. Here, from Giacomello, he received his robe made of a simple, coarse fabric, which would become the first habit of the Franciscan Order. In Gubbio, Francis then devoted himself to caring for lepers at the Hospital of San Lazzaro, not far from the Church of the Vittorina, where tradition holds that the encounter between the saint and the wolf took place. There are many other places in Gubbio associated with Francis, such as the large Convent of St. Francis and the Church of St. Francis of Peace, which, according to tradition, was built on the site where the wolf of Gubbio was buried.
At the end of the tour, you’ll enjoy a tasting of typical Umbrian truffle-based products and a glass of wine.
