What you can expect
Meet your guide at the Port of Cádiz and hop into a 4x4, SUV, or off-road vehicle to begin your journey to Conil de la Frontera, Vejer, and the spectacular Playa del Palmar.
CONIL DE LA FRONTERA
Learn about the town's history, which dates back to the 14th century, when it was on the border between the Christian Kingdom of Castile and the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada. See the Torre de Guzmán, built by the Dukes of Medina-Sidonia as a defensive structure and the town's central hub. Discover the town's main landmarks, including the town and beach towers, the gates, and the defensive wall built to protect the town from attempts at reconquest and to safeguard the fishing industry.
Explore the Barrio de las Flores, where the influence of the Muslim border town is evident in the whitewashed houses, flower-filled courtyards, water cisterns, wells, narrow alleys, and the town's orientation to take advantage of the cool east and west breezes.
Learn about the town's tuna fishing tradition, including the almadraba technique, the ronqueo (tuna butchering), and the production of garum, a sauce that has been highly prized since Roman times. Visit the Tuna Centre in the former Church of Santa Catalina and the Casa Museo de Raíces Conileñas to discover what family homes were like in the past.
Visit the Torre de Guzmán, the former prison, the Puerta de la Villa (also known as the Puerta de Vejer), the Convent Church and its viewpoint, and end your tour at La Chanca, an interpretation centre dedicated to tuna and tuna fishing techniques. Enjoy a walk along Playa de los Bateles and its promenade by the Atlantic Ocean.
PLAYA DEL PALMAR
Next, head to Playa del Palmar de Vejer, the most-visited beach in Cádiz. Relax on its seven kilometres of white sand and pristine waves, a popular spot for surfing and enjoying romantic sunsets. Enjoy a coffee or a soft drink while taking in the sea views under the warm sun.
VEJER DE LA FRONTERA
Finally, visit Vejer de la Frontera, a town steeped in history and legends. Explore the walled enclosure and learn the legend of the owl. Visit the Iglesia del Divino Salvador to find out why there is a Star of David on one of the church's doors.
Admire the Castle of the Dukes of Medina-Sidonia, a former Moorish kasbah, and learn about the city's Jewish, Christian, and Islamic past. Hear the storey of Lalla al-Zuhra, who, after being expelled from Andalusia, set off for North Africa to found Chefchaouen.
Stroll through Vejer, one of the most beautiful White Villages in Andalusia, and stop at the old gateways, such as Puerta de la Villa and Puerta de Sancho IV, each with its own fascinating history. End the tour with a stroll through the most iconic areas of the Old Town and learn the storey of Juan Relinque and the Hazas de Suerte.
