What you can expect
Halle (Saale) boasts over 1,200 years of history – and it is precisely this diversity that you will discover on this classic 2-hour walking tour of the old town. Accompanied by a guide certified by the Federal Association of Tour Guides, you will discover the most important sights in the city centre and learn how architecture, music, and the city's history continue to shape its character to this day.
Meet by the Händel monument on Marktplatz. From here, your journey through time begins: You will learn about the origins of the square and discover how Halle's famous “Five Towers” and the Gothic St. Mary's Church shape the cityscape. Optionally, you can take a short tour of the interior of the Marktkirche (Market Church), subject to prior booking. You will also hear anecdotes from the life of George Frideric Handel, find out where the name “Red Tower” comes from, and learn about the significance of the Roland statue.
You will then continue through the winding lanes of the old town to the birthplace of George Frideric Handel (Händelhaus) and to Halle Cathedral, whose history and architecture are as eventful as they are fascinating. Optionally, there will be a short tour of the interior of the cathedral (depending on opening hours). Afterwards, the tour will take you to Moritzburg (inner courtyard), a significant site for art and the city's history, as well as the youngest of all the castles on the Saale River.
Passing through squares and along streets dating back to the Wilhelminian era, you will finally reach Universitätsplatz (University Square), where you will find the Neoclassical Löwengebäude (Lion Building). Our tour, which offers plenty of insights, ends at the market square – and includes practical tips on what is particularly worth seeing in Halle.
Please arrive at the meeting point (Handel Monument – see photo) 10 minutes prior to the tour start time. You can recognise your tour guide by the green ribbon.
