What you can expect
Officially recognised by the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Spain, the Brazilian Way of St. James is a spiritual and cultural journey of approximately 22 kilometres (14 miles) through the northern part of the Island of Santa Catarina, in Florianópolis. The hike combines self-discovery, scenic trails, and idyllic beaches, offering a unique experience of connection with nature, local culture, and spirituality. Along the way, walkers pass four churches, four beaches, and two trails, following an itinerary that offers moments of reflection and personal growth.
The journey begins at the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Canasvieiras, where pilgrims receive a safety briefing and information about the journey. The route continues along the Canasvieiras waterfront, taking in the peaceful beaches as far as Cachoeira do Bom Jesus Beach, providing a gentle and enjoyable start. The next stop is St. Peter’s Church in Ponta das Canas, a chapel that honours local fishermen. Next, the route continues to Lagoinha Beach, known for its idyllic setting and calm waters.
The first trail on the route is Morro do Rapa, at an elevation of 160 metres (525 feet). The climb is challenging, but the panoramic view from the top is well worth the effort. During the hike, you may spot local wildlife such as the blue jay and marmoset monkeys. The Mata Atlântica vegetation is also enchanting, offering a complete immersion in nature.
After descending the hill, you will reach Praia Brava Beach, where the second trail, Morro das Feiticeiras, begins. This section of the forest is steeped in local stories about witches and sorceresses, linking the sacred to the mystical. The descent leads to Praia dos Ingleses, where the Church of Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes, founded in 1839, marks another important historical site. Along the way, pilgrims have the opportunity to experience the local culture, with its strong ties to the sea and spirituality.
The walk ends at the Sanctuary of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Ingleses, where pilgrims receive their credentials. This symbolic moment marks the end of the journey. The accredited guide shares information about the history of the churches, the fishing culture, and the significance of the Caminho de Santiago (Way of St. James), further enriching the experience.
The Brazilian Way of St. James offers more than a hike; it is a unique opportunity to connect with the nature and culture of the Island of Santa Catarina. Each section of the route offers moments of tranquility, reflection, and learning, allowing you to experience the region’s charm in an authentic and immersive way. Accompanied by accredited guides, you will enjoy an enriching and safe experience, exploring stunning beaches, challenging trails, and historic churches. Whether you’re looking to deepen your spirituality or simply enjoy the natural scenery, this is a journey well worth experiencing.
