What you can expect

  • Discover one of Crete’s most iconic and atmospheric beaches on this relaxing half-day trip to Matala Beach, located on the beautiful Bay of Messara, around 65 km from Heraklion.

Once a quiet fishing village, Matala became world-famous in the 1960s and 70s as a gathering place for hippies, artists, and free spirits. Today, it still retains its bohemian charm, with colourful streets, seaside tavernas, and a laid-back vibe that makes it truly unique.

The beach itself is a Blue Flag awarded sandy bay, framed by impressive sandstone cliffs carved with mysterious caves, believed to have been used as Roman or early Christian tombs. Half of the beach is shaded by tamarisk trees, offering a perfect balance of sun and shade.

Enjoy free time to swim in the crystal-clear waters, relax on the golden sand, explore the famous caves, or stroll through the village. With lifeguards, showers, toilets, beach sports, and family-friendly facilities, Matala offers the perfect mix of history, nature, and leisure — all in a protected Natura 2000 area.

A true Crete classic, Matala is not just a beach — it’s an experience
