【Huaqing Palace & Mount Li】
Located in Lintong District, Xi'an, Huaqing Palace and Mount Li form a renowned scenic area rich in natural beauty and historical significance. Mount Li, a branch of the Qinling Mountains, is named for its resemblance to a dark green steed (the character “Li” means a black horse). With an altitude of 1,302 metres, it boasts lush landscapes and is famous for the beautiful sunset glow known as “Evening Glow over Mount Li.” The mountain is dotted with historical sites such as the Beacon Tower and the Crying General's Pavilion, bearing witness to major historical events like King You of Zhou's beacon tower trick and the Xi'an Incident.
Huaqing Palace is located at the northern foot of Mount Li. Once a hot spring retreat for Tang dynasty emperors, it is renowned for its rich geothermal resources. Key attractions within the complex include the site of the Tang dynasty imperial hot spring pools and the Five-Room Pavilion. This is also where the poignant love storey of Emperor Xuanzong and his beloved consort Yang Guifei unfolded.
【The Song of Everlasting Sorrow Performance】
The large-scale historical dance drama The Song of Everlasting Sorrow is based on the renowned narrative poem by Bai Juyi. Staged at Huaqing Palace, the very setting of the historical love storey, it brings to life the legendary romance between Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang dynasty and his beloved concubine, Yang Guifei.
The plot begins with Yang Guifei entering the palace and winning the emperor's heart. The two share vows of eternal love. However, the An Lushan Rebellion shatters their idyllic life. Forced to flee, Yang Guifei meets her tragic end at Mawei Slope. Overcome with grief, the emperor returns to the palace, haunted by memories. Ultimately, he reunites with her in a dream, rekindling their love in a celestial realm. The performance vividly portrays their journey from imperial bliss to heartbreaking separation.
