What you can expect

Explore the ancient Chavín de Huántar archaeological site in Peru. Learn about the Chavín culture and its history as you wander through the ruins and artefacts of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Start your tour in the Ancash region, 434 kilometres (270 mi) north of Lima, at an elevation of 3,180 metres (10,430 ft), east of the Cordillera Blanca at the start of the Conchucos Valley.

Discover the Chavín culture, a major pre-Inca culture that occupied the site from around 1200 BC to 500 BC. See the massive flat-topped platform of the temple, which was the religious centre of the Chavín people and the political capital.

Explore the U-shaped Plaza with a sunken circular court in the centre. Admire the sculptures and carvings that decorate the inside of the temple walls.

See the Major Plaza, the Circular Plaza, the Old Temple, and the New Temple. Learn about the history of the site and its significance as a gathering place for people of the region to come together and worship.
