When we arrive at the town of Santa María, you will have a great lunch at a local restaurant.
Later in the afternoon, those people who have made prior reservations will be able to go river rafting. (Additional cost for river rafting is $30US per person). This activity is a lot of fun but is only available during the dry season months. (From April through November).

Day 2: Santa María – Santa Teresa (hiking and hot springs)

It is certainly something that you wouldn´t want to miss. This trail is still used by the locals today. During the hike, we will pass by waterfalls, rushing streams, orchards of tropical fruit trees, and farms where they grow root crops typical of the region. There will brightly coloured tropical birds and all kinds of unique flora and fauna. Discover the pretty orchids and see the farms where they grow coffee, oranges, bananas, avocados, and more. We will be passing through what is called the ´eyebrow of the jungle´. It is one of the most biologically diverse places on the planet.
In the afternoon we will arrive at the Cocalmayo hot springs. This spot is famous for its healing, medicinal waters. After a relaxing soak, we will settle in at our comfortable hostal located in the village of Santa Teresa where we will spend the night. Perhaps you will enjoy trying out a ‘pisco sour’ at one of the small, but friendly pubs in town.

Also, those people who have made their reservations in advance can go zip-lining. This a one of the most thrilling parts of the journey. (Additional cost is $30US per person)
After a short rest to enjoy the view, we will head down to the village called “Hidroeléctrica”. where we will have lunch at one of the restaurants.
After lunch it is an easy 3-hour walk along the train route to Aguas Calientes. This is the part of the trip that has the most splendid views and the most impressive waterfalls. There will be old bridges, snow-covered glaciers, and coca plantations to see. The town of Aguas Calientes is also known as ‘Machu Picchu Pueblo’. That is where we will spend the night in a comfortable Hotel at the foot of Machu Picchu Mountain.
In the evening we will get together at a tourist restaurant where we will have a delicious dinner. Then, together with our guide, we will plan out our following day´s visit to Machu Picchu.

The guide will not be with you on the climb because he will have a lot of details to coordinate, but he will meet you at the entry gate in to Machu Picchu. We also have the policy of protecting our guides from the continual physical stress of climbing which can be damaging to the knees.
Soon after we enter the ruins, if luck is with us, we´ll view the magnificence of sunrise over the peaks at Machu Picchu. Our guide will be with us and will share his detailed knowledge of the site during our two-hour guided tour.
Those people who have thought ahead and purchased an additional $45US per person ticket to climb up either Huaynapicchu Mountain or Machupicchu Mountain will be able to have a magnificent view of the ruins from high above. The extra climb takes about 3 hours, but it is well worth the effort. The view from the top is unforgettable.
In the afternoon we will return to Aguas Calientes where you will have lunch and you can walk around one last time or buy souvenirs and get ready for train ride back to Ollantaytambo and connect with a private van to take us back to Cusco.
