Begin your tour in Piazza Verdi, the perfect spot to introduce Piombino as a border town, a gateway to Elba, and an ancient fortified centre overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. From here, head to the Porta a Terra area, the historic entrance to the city, where you can learn about the medieval and Renaissance defensive system that protected the village.
Continue towards the centre to reach the Church of Mercy, a small but significant stop to understand the religious and civil dimension of the ancient city. From here, climb to the Citadel, a space linked to the history of the Appiani family and the transformation of Piombino from a fortified village to a small noble capital.
Descend towards the Marina canals, where the storey changes: from the walled city to the direct relationship with the sea, the port, maritime activities, and Piombino's strategic position in front of the island of Elba. Reach the most scenic point of the visit: Piazza Bovio, a large natural terrace overlooking the sea, with views of the Tuscan Archipelago.
After a short panoramic stop, return to the historic heart, passing in front of the Town Hall and the Clock Tower, symbols of the city's civil power. Continue towards the Co-Cathedral of Sant'Antimo, the main religious building in the historic centre, and conclude at the Rivellino, one of the most evident testimonies of the ancient fortifications of Piombino.
