Once you reach the top of the town, you can visit Palazzo d'Avalos, which later became the Royal Palace and was converted into a prison in 1830, before being closed in 1988. Another splendid attraction is the Abbey of Saint Michael (the island's patron saint), which houses numerous works, including a painting depicting Saint Michael defeating Satan. On the western side of the island lies the islet of Vivara, connected to the main island by a long footbridge. Vivara is an uninhabited area, but it is actually a volcanic crater that is now submerged.
