GRAMVOUSA ISLAND
The Gramvousa Castle is a historic fortress located on Gramvousa Island, in the northwestern part of Crete. Built by the Venetians in 1579 during the Venetian occupation of Crete, the fortress was intended to protect the area from pirates and Ottoman attacks. Strategically positioned at an elevation of about 137 metres above the sea, it offers impressive views of the surrounding area and the Cretan Sea.The castle played a significant role in Cretan history, particularly during the Greek War of Independence in 1821. The rebels captured the fortress in 1825 and used it as a base for attacks against the Ottomans while also serving as a refuge for the local population. Gramvousa was also known as a pirate base after the Revolution, with pirates raiding ships passing through the area. In 1830, the castle was ceded to the Ottomans as part of the treaty that granted Crete under their rule.
