What you can expect

Take a half-day pilgrimage to the Batu Caves, a remarkable 113-year-old temple complex 13 kilometres north of Kuala Lumpur.

Following a pick-up from your city centre hotel, transfer by private air-conditioned vehicle to the limestone hills where the caves and shrines are located. Discovered by the American naturalist William Hornaday in 1878, the area was already known to Chinese settlers and indigenous people (as well as the resident monkeys).

Opt to climb the 272 footsteps to the cave entrance for a remarkable view of Kuala Lumpur sprawling down below. See the world’s 2nd tallest statue of a Hindu deity. Visit during the annual Thaipusam celebrations, and you will joining the millions of people from around the world who gather there to witness the colourful celebrations.

Whatever time of year you visit, you will also get the chance to see some traditional batik painting, and visit the famous Royal Selangor Pewter factory.
