Step into a peaceful 100-year-old Kyoto machiya and experience Shodō (Japanese calligraphy) as a mindful and meditative cultural practice.
This small-group experience is guided in English by a Japanese female calligraphy artist and is designed for travellers seeking a deeper, more reflective connection with Japanese culture. Rather than focusing on technical perfection, the class centers on Zen words and philosophy, encouraging participants to slow down, breathe, and express their inner state through ink and brush.
You will begin by gently preparing the ink and familiarising yourself with the brush, allowing your mind to settle naturally. From there, you will explore simple Zen words that resonate with themes such as presence, impermanence, and inner calm. Through guided practice, you will learn how each stroke reflects not only movement, but also breath and awareness.
The experience takes place in a traditional Kyoto townhouse, offering a quiet atmosphere far removed from busy sightseeing spots. No prior calligraphy experience is required, and all tools are provided. At the end of the session, you will create a final piece on fine calligraphy paper to take home as a meaningful personal keepsake.
This experience is ideal for travellers who wish to pause, reflect, and encounter Japanese culture in a calm and authentic way.
