Formed by volcanic activity from nearby Mount Hiyori, this steaming valley is filled with bubbling hot springs, sulfuric vents, and rugged volcanic terrain that creates an otherworldly atmosphere. Visitors can walk along well-maintained wooden trails and observation paths that lead through the valley, allowing them to safely experience the power of nature up close while enjoying panoramic views of the steaming crater. The rising clouds of steam, the scent of sulphur in the air, and the constantly flowing hot spring waters make this area feel like stepping into another world. As the main source of the famous Noboribetsu hot springs, Jigokudani also provides a fascinating look into the natural forces that have shaped one of Japan’s most renowned onsen regions.

Shōwa-shinzan

Visitors can admire the impressive volcanic landscape up close, take photos of the striking terrain, and learn about the history of its formation at nearby viewing areas. The area also offers beautiful views of surrounding mountains and the peaceful Lake Toya region. Travellers often explore the nearby attractions such as the Showa Shinzan Bear Ranch or take the Usuzan Ropeway to enjoy panoramic views of the volcanic terrain and Lake Toya from above, making Shōwa-shinzan a memorable stop for nature lovers and photography enthusiasts.

The area around the lakeshore is also home to the charming Toyako Onsen hot spring town, where travellers can enjoy foot baths, cafes, and local shops while soaking in the tranquil atmosphere. On clear days, the view of nearby Mount Usu and Shōwa-shinzan creates a stunning natural backdrop, making Lake Toya lakeside a perfect spot to relax and experience the natural beauty of Hokkaido.
