Discover the different chapters of Lecce’s history, from its Roman heritage and medieval past to the beauty of its Baroque architecture.
Begin with a visit to medieval underground rooms, where an ancient chamber and basins associated with Jewish purification rituals offer a glimpse into life in the city's former Jewish quarter. This visit forms one part of a walking tour that takes place mainly above ground, among Lecce’s streets, squares, and landmarks.
Continue to the Basilica of Santa Croce to admire its richly decorated Baroque façade. Then head to Piazza Sant’Oronzo, the former market square, where you will see Il Sedile, the historic town hall, the Roman column topped by the statue of the city’s patron saint, and the Roman amphitheatre.
Walk along Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, taking in historic palaces and the exterior of Sant’Irene Church. Finish in Piazza del Duomo, where the cathedral, bell tower, Bishop’s Palace, and seminary create a remarkable Baroque setting, all admired from the outside.
