What you can expect

Discover the rich pastoral and culinary heritage of Lazarat with Jaco and his family, who have been shepherding sheep and goats for centuries. The experience takes place both inside and outside the family’s cheese house, where guests can also explore a small family museum displaying traditional tools and objects used by shepherds across generations.

Guests enjoy a tasting of seven artisanal dishes based on fresh local dairy products, prepared from original family recipes. Cheeses such as kackavalli, yellow cheese melted over fire, yogurt-based sauces, and homemade butter are paired with grilled wheat and corn bread, seasonal vegetables, sweet elements, and local drinks such as raki or fresh fruit juices. Each tasting is explained in detail, highlighting the recipes, ingredients, and traditional preparation techniques.

The experience is enriched with local polyphonic music, performed either by the family or by the nationally renowned Lazarat men’s polyphonic group, depending on group size. Guests are invited to actively participate by learning the iso and exploring the cultural connection between cheese tasting and polyphonic singing.

The visit concludes with time at the family shop, where guests can purchase artisanal dairy products, local drinks, and traditional creams. Guests leave with a deep appreciation of Lazarat’s culinary traditions and the flavours shaped by its pastures, mountains, and pure waters.

The experience takes place in a warm, personal setting, both inside the cheese house and in the outdoor garden. The intimate home environment and garden with panoramic views of the Drinos Valley ensure a cosy, hands-on experience ideal for small groups.
