[Practical Information, Location, and Access]
Visit the Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang, an unparalleled masterpiece of Buddhist rock art and a UNESCO World Heritage Site (since 2000). Carved continuously over more than 500 years since the Northern Wei Dynasty, the grottoes stretch along the cliffs of the Yi River, hosting over 2,300 grottoes and 100,000 stone statues.
Direct Admission with Passport: Avoid the complexities of local booking platforms. Your admission ticket allows you to go through a fast-track security check using your original physical passport.
How to Get There: From Luoyang Longmen High-Speed Train Station, a short 10-minute taxi ride will take you directly to the Northwest Service Centre (the most convenient entrance).
[Highlights of the Site and Masterpieces]
The complex is divided into several areas connected by a single scenic route:
The Caves of the Western Hill (The Main Core): This is where the most famous and impressive sculptures are concentrated.
Fengxian Temple and the Great Buddha of Longmen: The pinnacle of Tang Dynasty art. Standing 17.14 metres tall, this majestic main statue (sculpted in the likeness of Empress Wu Zetian) stands out for its serene and magnificent expression.
The Three Caves of Binyang, the Cave of the Ten Thousand Buddhas, and the Lotus Cave: A perfect contrast that allows you to appreciate the artistic transition from the slender, ethereal figures of the Wei period to the fullness and robustness of the Tang period.
The Caves of the Eastern Hill and Xiangshan Temple: Crossing the scenic bridge over the Yi River, the Eastern Hill offers the best vantage point for taking photos of the full profile of the Western Caves. You can also visit the historic Xiangshan Temple, former residence of the famous poet Bai Juyi.
