What you can expect
Discover the soul of the High Atlas Mountains on a guided walk through Megdaz, one of Morocco's most remarkable Amazigh villages. Explore centuries of history, architecture, and mountain traditions on a slow-paced cultural walk.
Admire the six ancient fortified kasbahs (Tighremt/Ighrem), some believed to be over 600 years old. Built by Amazigh families using local stone, rammed earth, timber, and clay, these fortified granaries protected grain, walnuts, valuables, and important family documents while also serving as safe refuges during times of conflict. Today, they stand as exceptional examples of Morocco's earthen architecture.
Walk through a maze of narrow alleys lined with multi-storey earthen houses that blend perfectly into the red mountains. Discover carved wooden doors, traditional flat roofs, defensive towers, and homes designed to stay naturally cool in summer and warm in winter. Every building reflects generations of Amazigh knowledge and sustainable construction adapted to the High Atlas environment.
See the seven traditional watermills, which are still powered by the flowing waters of the Tassaoute River. For centuries, these mills have ground barley, wheat, and maize for local families using the natural force of water. They remain a living example of sustainable mountain engineering and community life, making Megdaz one of the few places in Morocco where this ancestral tradition continues.
Follow the historic seguias (irrigation canals) that distribute fresh mountain water across the terraced fields. This ingenious system has sustained agriculture for centuries, allowing villagers to cultivate walnuts, almonds, apples, cereals, and vegetables in harmony with nature.
Meet local Amazigh families, learn about traditional farming, shepherding, weaving, bread baking, and the customs that have shaped village life for generations. Hospitality remains at the heart of Megdaz, where visitors are welcomed with warmth and authenticity.
Enjoy spectacular views of the Upper Tassaoute Valley, surrounded by dramatic red cliffs, lush terraces, walnut groves, orchards, and crystal-clear streams. The peaceful atmosphere, fresh mountain air, and breathtaking scenery make every step unforgettable.
Visit the birthplace of M'ririda N'Ait Aatik, one of Morocco's most celebrated Amazigh poets. Through her poetry, discover the emotions, traditions, freedom, and beauty of mountain life in the High Atlas.
