What you can expect
Embark on a journey that’s as sweet as it is enlightening with our History & Donuts Walking Tour, a 2.5-hour exploration that blends Melbourne’s rich past with its most delicious modern treat. This experience is designed for curious minds and hungry bellies alike, offering a perfect blend of fascinating stories and mouth-watering donut stops. If you like your history with a hint of sugar and a dash of fun, this is the tour for you.
The adventure begins at Federation Square, Melbourne’s modern-day cultural hub. It’s the perfect starting point to contrast the city’s vibrant present with its humble beginnings. From here, your guide will lead you past Young & Jackson’s Hotel, home to one of Australia’s most iconic paintings, and St Paul’s Cathedral, where stories of early settlement and spiritual life come to life.
As we move into Hosier Lane, prepare for an explosion of colour. This ever-changing gallery of street art is one of Melbourne’s most photographed laneways, and your guide will share stories that connect this contemporary canvas to the city’s ongoing cultural evolution. Then it’s onto Centre Place, a narrow laneway brimming with tiny cafés and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee. Here, we’ll pause for a quick coffee break—Melbourne-style—giving you a moment to relax, recharge, and soak up the café culture that defines this city.
Caffeinated and ready to go, we’ll head towards the Collins Street financial precinct, where towering facades and grand stone buildings whisper tales of ambition, banking empires, and Melbourne’s rise as a powerhouse of the south. You’ll pass the historic Mitre Tavern, one of the oldest buildings in the city, and hear stories of colonial mischief and mercantile success that shaped the Melbourne skyline.
Next stop: Hardware Lane, a charming stretch with European vibes and a layered past. From here, it’s time to hit the sweet spots—literally! We’ll visit Short Stop, home to some of Melbourne’s most gourmet donuts. Think brown butter and maple, Earl Grey and rose, or the classic cinnamon sugar—all made fresh, all delicious.
As you nibble on your donut, we’ll wander through Guildford Lane, a hidden red-brick laneway with heritage buildings and quirky character. It’s a peaceful detour that shows a different side of city life, away from the bustle.
Our final food stop takes us to the bustling Queen Victoria Market, where donut culture has long been part of the scene. Grab your last treat as we make our way to one of Melbourne’s most infamous landmarks: the Old Melbourne Gaol. Here, your guide will delve into the city’s darker history—crime, punishment, and infamous characters.
The tour wraps up at the grand State Library Victoria, a beacon of learning and one of the most beautiful public buildings in Australia. Whether you're here for the donuts, the stories, or both, you’ll leave with a deeper appreciation for the city—and maybe a slight sugar high.
