What you can expect
Join a hands-on cultural craft experience at Sairi Yashiki in Marumori, Miyagi. Using upcycled kimono fabric prepared by the host, you will sew your own 60cm x 60cm furoshiki (traditional Japanese wrapping cloth) with a sewing machine—then take it home as a practical souvenir you can use for gift-wrapping, carrying items, or everyday travel. The workshop takes place inside the atmospheric storehouses of Sairi Yashiki, a former merchant family residence that flourished from the late Edo period to the early Showa period, now open to the public as a local museum. After check-in, you’ll enjoy a short introduction to the site, followed by a furoshiki usage demonstration (how to wrap and tie). Next, choose your fabric and thread, then start sewing with step-by-step support from the instructor—beginners are welcome. Once completed, you’ll try wrapping an item with your finished furoshiki, and end with photo time. The experience is suitable for primary school students and above (assistance provided as needed), and is available in Japanese and English.
