Mojiko, located in Kitakyushu, Japan, is a charming port town known for its preserved retro architecture and scenic waterfront. Once a bustling international trading port, Mojiko now offers visitors a nostalgic glimpse into the early 20th century with attractions like the Mojiko Station, Kaikyo Plaza, and the Mojiko Retro District filled with cafes, museums, and shops. A unique feature of Mojiko is the Kanmon Pedestrian Tunnel, a 780-meter-long undersea passage that allows pedestrians to walk beneath the Kanmon Strait, connecting Kyushu and Honshu. The tunnel is free for pedestrians and takes about 15 minutes to traverse. Bicycles and motorbikes can also use the tunnel for a small fee, but must be pushed through. Another popular experience is the Kanmon Ferry, which offers a brief, scenic 5-minute voyage between Mojiko and Shimonoseki. This ferry ride provides stunning views of the Kanmon Bridge and the surrounding sea, making it a delightful way to cross the strait.
Tsunoshima Bridge

Motonosumi Inari Shrine

Established in 1955 following a local fisherman's vision of a white fox spirit, the shrine honours Inari Ōkami, the deity associated with prosperity, agriculture, and safety at sea. It is renowned for its 123 vermilion torii gates that wind down a steep hill towards the Sea of Japan, creating a vivid contrast against the cobalt blue waters and rugged coastline. A unique feature of the shrine is its offering box placed atop a tall torii gate; visitors attempt to toss coins into it, believing that a successful throw will grant their wishes. Due to its remote location, the shrine is best accessed by car or taxi from nearby stations like Nagato-Furuichi. Despite its seclusion, Motonosumi Inari Shrine has become a popular destination for its breathtaking scenery and spiritual significance.
