What you can expect
The tour takes you to one of the most iconic and famous parts of Paris, Montmartre. Depicted in numerous songs, works of art and films, Montmartre is exceptionally rich in history and is a densely layered cake. On this tour, your guide addresses all of those different layers that have blended together to make Montmartre what it is today. Most of its current fame comes from famous impressionist and post impressionist artists residing there at the turn of the century. However, this tour goes a few steps deeper to address the history of Montmartre that goes way back, to the era of the Roman presence in Paris, then medieval period, then the pre-modern period when Montmartre was a village supplying Paris with food.
Your guide will expose the thread that holds and connects all of these different periods and explain how most important aspects of Montmartre are still relevant in the world of today - phenomenons such are gentrification, cities consuming their rural environment, and areas changing their functions and character. Montmartre is a perfect example of urban and rural, past and present (and the future) clashing and coming together at the same time.
Of course, your guide is not blind to the unique beauty and charm of this quarter - it was for a considerable amount of time the hotspot of many now famous artists, singers, actors, writers, and bohemians. Their presence left a long and lasting imprint on the stairs and cobblestones of this hilltop.
