Standing at 1,041m high, Mt. Tarumae is an active volcano situated next to Lake Shikotsu in the Shikotsu-Toya National Park. Easily recognisable due to its big black lava dome, it is a popular hike with locals and tourists alike.
The hike starts from the 7th station and begins in bushes and trees. As you start to climb up the face of Mt. Tarumae, the alpine area comes in to view. We then continue up along the trail until we reach the crater rim. It is from there where you first get to see the impressive lava dome and the jetting steam coming from the many fumaroles. The climb continues up to the highest point, from where you can see superb views of Lake Shikotsu and the Pacific Ocean.
Next, we continue around the crater and do a full circle of the lava dome. Along the way we will find a spot to have lunch and to take a breather whilst enjoying the views. Lastly, we head back down to the car and drive back to Noboribetsu.
This hike is a great introduction to one of Hokkaido's iconic volcanoes!
