Overview

A cruise through Mumbai Harbour brings you to the rock cut cave temples on Elephanta Island. In 1987, the caves were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The rock cut temple complex covers an area of 60,000 square feet consisting of a main chamber, two lateral ones, courtyards and subsidiary shrines. Elephanta Caves (Closed on Mondays), a UNESCO World Heritage site, is situated 9kms off the coast of Mumbai and an hour ride by ferry from the Gateway of India. Known in ancient times as Gharapuri, the present name was given by the 17th century Portuguese explorers after seeing a monolithic basalt sculpture of an elephant here. It consists of two groups of caves - the first is a large group of five Hindu caves and the second, a smaller group of two Buddhist caves
