Begin your adventure with a scenic drive from Tokyo to Nagano. Once you arrive, head to the famous Jigokudani Monkey Park. Walk through a peaceful forest to reach the hot springs where wild Japanese macaques soak and play. Capture photos of these unique creatures, the only wild monkeys in the world that bathe in hot springs.
Next, visit the historic Zenko-ji Temple, one of Japan’s most important Buddhist temples. Walk through the huge wooden gates, listen to the temple bells, and explore the dark underground passage said to bring enlightenment. Outside, stroll along Nakamise Street, where you can shop for souvenirs and sample local treats like Nagano’s famous apple sweets and freshly steamed dumplings.
Continue to Shibu Onsen Town, a charming hot spring village with narrow cobblestone streets and traditional wooden inns. Stroll through the town, try an onsen manju snack, or sip some local sake. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a snow monkey exploring the town.
Depending on the season and your interests, your journey may also include visits to local countryside areas, traditional villages, mountain viewpoints, artisan shops, food markets, and lesser-known locations rarely visited by large tour groups.
