What you can expect

  • Discover a side of Nagoya many visitors miss on a guided walk through Shikemichi’s historic merchant quarter, hidden rooftop shrines, traditional storehouses, narrow alleys, and the nostalgic streets of Endoji.

Just a short distance from the modern towers around Nagoya Station, step into streets shaped by merchants, waterways, temples, and everyday local life.

Begin in Shikemichi, a historic merchant district created during the development of Nagoya Castle in the early Edo period.

Walk past traditional machiya townhouses, old storehouses raised on stone foundations, narrow alleys, wooden buildings, and historic walls while learning how merchants helped shape Nagoya’s castle town.

Look above the streets for one of the neighborhood’s most unusual details: small rooftop deities known as yanegami. These hidden shrines preserve a distinctive local tradition that can be easy to miss when exploring alone.

Continue through quieter lanes around Nagono, where historic buildings now stand beside renovated cafés, restaurants, galleries, independent shops, and local homes.

Depending on the route, walk near Horikawa and discover how the canal supported the movement of goods and the growth of Nagoya’s merchant culture.

Then continue into Endoji Shopping Street.

Walk beneath the covered arcade where long-established businesses, temples, local restaurants, cafés, retro shopfronts, and newer independent shops create a lively mix of old and new Nagoya.

Rather than rushing between major landmarks, this tour focuses on the details of the area: merchant houses, hidden shrines, old signs, narrow alleys, local shops, and the everyday streets that preserve the atmosphere of Nagoya’s historic city centre.

The contrast is the heart of the experience: preserved merchant streets in Shikemichi followed by the nostalgic, lived-in atmosphere of Endoji.

Your guide can introduce local sweets, snacks, cafés, and speciality shops depending on opening hours. Food, drinks, and shopping are optional and paid separately.

The tour finishes around Endoji, within easy reach of Nagoya Station and central Nagoya.

The exact route may be adjusted depending on shop opening hours, weather, events, and local conditions.
