The construction of the current Sanctuary dates back to the 14th century, when King D. Fernando came on pilgrimage to Senhora da Nazaré. In its interior, the Sacred Image of Our Lady of Nazaré is kept, a Black Virgin, carved in wood, brought from Mérida to this site, in the year 711. The spread of the legend and the cult of Our Lady of Nazaré and the constant flow of pilgrims, helped to establish the Sanctuary of Sítio as one of the most important in the national context during the modern era.

With a privileged location, near the Nazaré promontory, it is currently considered the main observation post of the giant waves at Praia do Norte, which turned Nazaré into a world surf reference. The Fort currently houses the Nazaré Interpretive Centre, the Surfer Wall and several periodic expositive contents. Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version)
