Nîmes, 1764.
My grandfather, Étienne, had a passionate soul. He was an antiquarian, which means he was passionate about everything that bore the mark of the Roman world. In Nîmes, all he had to do was bend down to let his imagination run wild. Everywhere, there were ruins, fragments, and traces of the past. He kept a notebook with an ink-stained cover, in which he meticulously copied Latin inscriptions, drew forgotten moldings, and jotted down his thoughts. For him, each stone was a poem.
This is how our tour begins: following in the footsteps of an 18th-century man, and then of his granddaughter, Élise, who would carry on the tradition in the century to come. Together, they will guide us through a Nîmes of knowledge, elegance, and archaeology steeped in love.
