What you can expect
Begin your journey with a boat trip through Tam Coc, known as “Ha Long Bay on Land.” Board a traditional sampan boat rowed skilfully by locals down the peaceful Ngô Đồng River. Wind through magnificent rice paddies, surrounded on both sides by towering limestone karsts. Pass directly through the three natural caves—Hang Cả, Hang Hai, and Hang Ba—where you must sometimes duck low to admire the stalactites clinging to the ceiling.
Next, visit Thái Vi Temple, hidden amongst the dramatic landscape near the Ngô Đồng River. This ancient temple is dedicated to the emperors and queens of the Trần Dynasty (13th - 14th centuries), who established a military base (Vũ Lâm Palace) in the area. Its secluded location—often reached by cycling or a short walk through rice fields after the boat trip—provides an opportunity for spiritual contemplation away from larger crowds.
Continue to Bích Động Pagoda, a beautiful, three-tiered ancient pagoda built directly into a mountainside. Access the complex via a stone bridge that crosses a lotus pond. The pagoda is divided into three sections: Hạ (Lower) Pagoda at the base, Trung (Middle) Pagoda half-way up the cliff face, and Thượng (Upper) Pagoda at the very top, offering a lovely view of the surrounding scenery. The upward climb combines architecture, cave exploration, and spiritual devotion.
Finally, conquer the roughly 500 stone steps carved into the sheer limestone cliff face, leading to the top of Lying Dragon Mountain (Núi Ngọa Long). The summit provides the most famous panoramic view of Ninh Binh, showcasing the entire Tam Coc valley, the winding Ngô Đồng River, and the endless tapestry of karst peaks disappearing into the distance.
